The Pillars

Works built around the concept of a single Pillar - tunings of exponential multiples of one of the core numbers of The Four Pillars
When I initially developed The Four Pillars, the organization of the aspects of the tuning into four distinct "sections" was paramount. Early examinations into these Pillars yielded deeper understanding of the possibilities of the tuning itself.
Each of the Pillars has its own character, typified by the sound and space of the seconds involved. The Second Pillar with its wide septimal seconds feels spacious and profound, it is dedicated to my guru La Monte Young whose use of septimal tunings is revolutionary and deeply inspirational. The First Pillar and The Third Pillar share the 3:2 interval as their core and focus on the more narrow but sublimely elegant 9:8 second. The Fourth Pillar remains relatively unexplored, its focus on 11 lending an ominous air to the harmony of The Four Pillars.
